South Georgia has a large number of highly productive farms. This area has a long growing season with mostly moderate winters and summers. Most years have adequate rainfall and sometimes a surplus. There have been drought years but South Georgia has a large number of irrigated farms that help to maintain production. A variety of crops are produced in South Georgia such as peanuts, corn, cotton, wheat, watermelons, produce and tobacco. In addition this area has horse farms and numerous cattle operations. The long growing season is also good for timber production. Paper companies, lumber companies, and large timber investment groups own land here. Pine is the most produced timber located here, various hardwood species also are harvested in large quantities.
